Learning to teach with brain breaks

A short orientation for people who are learning to become teachers — and a useful bookmark for those who already are.

What this site is

Brain Breaks is a small classroom tool: short, optional, low-pressure activities that give students a genuine reset. It is not a program, a curriculum, or a collection of lesson plans. A brain break is one simple thing a teacher can offer between stretches of learning.

The one rule

Students may experience brain breaks differently. Participation should never depend on everyone responding, moving, speaking, or engaging in exactly the same way. A student who sits quietly through a movement break has still had a break. Your job is to offer the break — never to perform it out of your students.

How to use this site while you learn

  1. Experience the breaks yourself. Pick a mood on the home page, or take a Surprise Me. Notice what actually resets you and what doesn't — that felt sense is the foundation of your judgment later.
  2. Open the Teacher Lens. Every activity has a quiet "Teacher Lens" panel underneath it. It explains why a teacher might use that kind of break, when it helps, one simple way to facilitate it, and what to notice about your students while it happens.
  3. Practice reading the room. The lens will keep asking you to observe energy, comfort, participation differences, and readiness to return to learning. That habit of noticing is the real skill this site is here to help you build.

There is nothing here to complete, submit, track, or earn. Already teaching? You can skip all of this — every activity shows quick facts (minutes, materials, group size) so you can scan, project, and go.

Two minutes is enough. Then come back and read it like a teacher.
